Tym Moss IS Pride Month!
You can’t mention LGBTQ Pride Month without including one of its most perennial figures. That’s Tym Moss, actor, vocalist, journalist, producer, and gay New York city icon. Before the pandemic, you could go to Queens Pride and find him singing for the kids on the Main stage. The following week, in Park Slope at Brooklyn Pride, Tym might be hosting the show. Or maybe you took the ferry to Staten Island Pride and saw Tym doing his thing there. Or, you rolled uptown on the IRT subway, and oh, my God, it’s Tym again, this time performing for Bronx Pride (Tym has even served as a past president of an organization trying to create a Bronx LGBTQ Pride Center). Over the course of many years, Tym, whose film credits include the hit gay musical Junk, is a literal fountain of talent, and at no time are his gifts more visible than during Pride Month.
“I love to be out there on the stage,” Tym says, “because that’s where the real me lives.” When Tym isn’t acting in a play, he’s doing television projects for UBC-TV, a popular new streaming platform, or developing serious extravaganzas, like his deeply moving and poignant cabaret showcase. “I feel like being before an audience is the best way for me to express myself,” Tym notes, “and it’s my chance to love in ways that were suppressed in me when I was younger”. Often, Tym’s life as a gay man is a central theme of his work, but the veteran showman makes every performance a statement. This year, as we slowly return to normal following the devastating global pandemic that shut everything down, including Pride, Tym is wasting no moment in restoring himself as a cynosure of all eyes.
Pride Month is no exception to this. While the “borough Prides” are virtual again in 2021, Tym is bounding forth at other live-in-person venues like trendy East Village eatery Pangea, where he will reprise his critically-acclaimed cabaret show, Fun, Fabulous, Flamboyant.
